THAILAND | Part 1 - Mum visiting and backpacking with me!
After our little adventure on the East Coast of Australia my Mum and I were flying from the Gold Coast to Krabi, Thailand. Unfortunately Viv didn't come with us because he had to go back to work as the Easter holidays had already finished.
We had decided that we wanted to spend more time in Phi Phi island than in Krabi itself and we didn't have much time anyway, so we ended up catching a bus to the ferry from the airport and an hour or so later we arrived in Phi Phi island.
The weather was amazing when we arrived and wow, what a stunning place.
Peacefully floating |
We didn't have accommodation booked yet because we didn't know where would be the best location to stay, so we decided to get there first and have a look at a few options because since my mum is not that young anymore, she would like to have a good night sleep at least.
Around our hotel |
So we looked at a few places in the centre which he was pretty good but it was a bit overpriced because it was way too close to everything, shop, bars, restaurants so we kept walking for about 10-15 minutes from town and then we found an amazing place by the water which had an awesome sunset view from the pool and it was really lovely all the nature around it.
It wasn't the cheapest place but for my Mum it was perfect since it had everything she needed, it was a clean bungalow, it had hot water, a beautiful pool, awesome view, breakfast included and Wi-Fi also, so my mum loved it and I loved it too...How could you not love it? I think we paid about $40 per night and which wasn't too bad considering Phi Phi Island is expensive nowadays.
My birthday was going to be in two days and I wanted to spend the day in Maya Bay so we decided to do the Boat tour to see the islands around Phi Phi.
We ended up choosing that fast boat because my mum would feel seasick with tail boat that typical Thai boat. It was almost double the price, but we got an ok deal too after some research and negotiation.
Check out the short video of us exploring Thailand here! :)
Maya and her mum at Maya Bay haha |
We spent our time exploring the area, going to nice restaurants and trying not to spend too much money of course because we were travelling on a budget. We walked a lot and we didn't go to that famous viewpoint because my mum wouldn't be able to, it was too much of a workout for her and she was happy just to stay down there enjoying the view and the beach, the warm and nice turquoise water.
Brekky with a view! |
The boat tour on my birthday was amazing!! We had an amazing time really. We spent a full day boating, from early morning to sunset. We had lunch there and lots of fun, we saw little monkeys, fish, all the different shades of blue and green, good music and stunning views.
The guides were really nice and informative, and one of them very friendly that I cannot remember his name oops! took me to see sharks at the reef nearby and I had never seen sharks that's close to me before!!!
The famous Thai Long-tail boat, not our boat, we were on a fast one... |
It was such a lovely experience because I was just chilling there snorkeling looking at some fish, by the way, so many beautiful fish and corals, when the friendly guide came close to me and asked if I wanted to see sharks and I was like yeah! hell yeah!!
Sure thing, and then he grabbed my hand and we went swimming to this reef nearby and oh my gossshhh there was probably 10+ sharks and we were swimming among them! Haha It was funny, I started freaking out a bit since it was my first time seeing them and SO close like that. I was just so impressed and so happy that I managed to see them!
Unfortunately my mum didn’t see the sharks and she was happy not to see them anyway hahaha she is not a bit fan of sharks and she doesn’t swim so she was also quite happy to stay on the boat and just watch the fish from there, as the water was so clear she could see them well and some corals too depending on where we were.
Oh and she actually freaked out when she noticed I wasn’t snorkeling around the boat anymore. But it wasn’t for long, I arrived and told her about the sharks and then she freaked out even more hahaha.

Back in town, we went to some bars, had a few beers, enjoyed the music and the party on the beach at night, where there was all these guys with fires doing crazy things, it was impressive actually. There was even this kid which was probably 7 year old and he was doing that to stick with this crazy fire going on, oh gosh.. it was fun to watch the adults tho and do some people watching as well and see them climbing up some huge inflatable penis lol. Interesting.
The most amazing sunset view from the hotel pool |
We spent a total of 4 days in Phi Phi and then we decided to go to Phuket to check out some other beaches, the first would be Kata beach, so we caught the ferry across.
But as soon as we arrived we noticed a lot of water being splashed around and had no idea what was going on… then that’s when I told Viv and he figured it was the famous Songkran!!! It was exciting and then he I told eme we should go to Chiang Mai, that we would have an awesome time as it's best city to be during this time!

The Big Buda in Phuket |
And it was a great idea too since it would be my first time there as well as my mums. I had been to Phuket before but I didn't end up going to Phi Phi Islands and so it was good for both of us seeing new places.
Next post I will talk about some of what we did in Chiang Mai :)
